BUSY WEEK ON TAP FOR NUCLEAR ISSUES ON CAPITOL HILL

Here are the events we’ll be keeping an eye on this week:

  • Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will testify this week twice on the Fiscal Year 2015 budget request—at a House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday at 10 a.m., and Thursday morning at a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing.
  • On Tuesday at 2:15 p.m., National Nuclear Security Administration nonproliferation chief Anne Harrington will testify before the Senate Armed Services Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee on “Proliferation Prevention Programs at the Department of Energy and at the Department of Defense.” Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Rebecca Hersman and Defense Threat Reduction Agency Director Kenneth Myers will also testify at the hearing in Room 222 of the Russell Senate Office Building.
  • Strategic Command chief Adm. Cecil Haney will appear before the House Armed Services Committee at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Room 2118 of the Rayburn House Office Building along with other military commanders.
  • The NNSA will dominate the attention of the House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee Thursday in Room 2362-B of the Rayburn House Office Building. Acting NNSA chief Bruce Held will testify along with Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs Don Cook and Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for Military Applications Brig. Gen. James Dawkins at 10 a.m. on the agency’s weapons program. Held will return at 2 p.m. with Harrington and Naval Reactors Director Adm. John Richardson to address the NNSA’s nonproliferation account and Naval Reactors program.
