BWX Technologies, Lynchburg, Va., has appointed Toby Smith as its new senior vice president and general counsel, replacing Ronald (Chip) Whitford, the company said last week.
BWXT expects that Whitford will stay on in an advisory role through early 2026, the company said in a Nov. 6 press release.
BWXT said Smith has logged more than 20 years in the legal field, having served stints as in-house counsel for the former United Technologies Corporation, an aircraft and defense company now part of RTX Corporation. He has also been outside litigation counsel for Otis Worldwide Corporation, the elevator company.
At Otis, Smith’s most recent post, he oversaw compliance with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and New York Stock Exchange regulations, BWXT said in the release.
“Toby’s broad and global experience will serve BWXT well as we continue to invest for growth and expand our capabilities and geographic footprint,” BWXT CEO Rex Geveden said of the company’s new legal chief.
“I would also like to thank Chip [Whitford] for his many contributions to the organization over his eight years with us and look forward to working with him through this transition,” Geveden said.
BWXT reported Whitford’s planned departure in a Nov. 4 filing with the SEC. “Mr. Whitford’s decision is not related to any legal issue or any disagreement with the company or any matter relating to its operation, policies or practices,” the company said in the filing.
The nuclear services company went on to say Whitford would stay on during a transition period in which he would serve as a special adviser to the CEO.
