WASHINGTON — Acting Assistant Energy Secretary for Environmental Management Sue Cange would not comment Wednesday about rumors that she will be replaced as the temporary head of DOE’s Cold War nuclear-cleanup program.
Politico Pro first reported Wednesday that DOE will replace Cange, an agency veteran who came to DOE headquarters after managing cleanup at the Oak Ridge site in Tennessee, as acting head of the roughly $6-billion-a-year Office of Environmental Management. Cange took over the post from Monica Regalbuto after Donald Trump was sworn in as president on Jan. 20.
While the agency has indeed decided to replace Cange as acting head of EM, it has not settled on her replacement, a source with knowledge of conversations within the Energy Department said Wednesday. Likewise, the Trump administration has not nominated a permanent assistant secretary for environmental management; the Senate must confirm the White House’s choice for the post.
Cange declined to comment about the rumors Wednesday evening here after a meeting of the industry-sponsored House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus on Capitol Hill.
