Ernest Moniz and Joan Rohlfing, chief executive officer and chief operating officer of Nuclear Threat Initiative respectively, are stepping down from their roles in 2025 with no refills in place yet.
According to a Wednesday press release by the Washington-based nonproliferation-focused nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), Moniz and Rohlfing messaged the board, staff and partners about their exit plans. Moniz will remain as CEO and co-chair until his position is filled, while Rohlfing will leave his role in June.
Moniz joined the nonprofit in 2017 after he had served as the U.S. Secretary of Energy during President Barack Obama’s second term. Rohlfing was a founding member and served as president since 2010 and senior vice president in the nine years prior. She held senior DOE jobs during the Bill Clinton administration.
The NTI board of directors has formed a committee to identify candidates to fill both positions. It is led by Adm. Michael Mullen, USN (Ret.) who has been a member of the board since 2018.
“Ernie and Joan have made major contributions as NTI has proved time and again that significant risk reduction is possible and doable,” former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), co-founder and co-chair of NTI, said in the press release. “Because of their expertise and their leadership of a great team, NTI is in a strong position to address the increasingly urgent security issues facing our nation and the world.”
