Deep Fission to break ground in Kansas for its pilot reactor

By ExchangeMonitor

Deep Fission has selected Great Plains Industrial Park in Parsons, Kan. as the site for its underground pilot reactor.

Berkeley, Calif. nuclear reactor technology company Deep Fission will hold its groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, according to its Dec. 4 press release. The company has one of 11 projects selected under the Department of Energy’s advanced reactor pilot program.

Under the program, DOE has set out a goal of at least three reactors reaching criticality by July 4, 2026.

The Great Plains Industrial Park is an established site for industrial and energy development and gives it a unique opportunity to scale onsite and grow the park for years to come, Deep Fission said.

Along with achieving criticality at the Kansas site, Deep Fission and the Great Plains Development Authority have signed a letter of intent to develop a full-scale commercial project at the same site.

Elizabeth Muller, co-founder and CEO of Deep Fission, said this pilot is “an exciting step toward an energy-abundant America,” according to the release.

“We’re proud to partner with the Great Plains Industrial Park and southeast Kansas to show what’s possible with next-generation nuclear,” Muller said.

Deep Fission’s reactor, recently named Gravity, is a 15-megawatt pressurized water reactor that can be placed one mile underground.

Deep Fission also considered developing its reactor at Texas and Utah
