The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board will hold a hearing April 29 in Carlsbad, N.M., on last year’s incidents at WIPP. Operations at WIPP have been shut down since a Feb. 5, 2014, truck fire and the Feb. 14 radiological release, impacting waste programs across the Department of Energy complex. In the all-day meeting, the Board will receive testimony. At the end of the meeting, the Board will deliberate and vote on a senior DNFSB staff proposal that would update the Board’s oversight of WIPP recovery and corrective actions to resume waste operations. On the agenda for the meeting are DOE acting cleanup chief Mark Whitney, DOE Carlsbad Field Office Manager Joe Franco and officials from WIPP contractor Nuclear Waste Partnership.
