DOE Cleanup Funding Boosted, NNSA Cut Slightly in Senate E&W Appropriations

By ExchangeMonitor
Funding for the Department of Energy’s cleanup programs would see a boost in the Senate Energy and Water Fiscal Year 2016 Appropriations legislation that cleared the subcommittee yesterday, but would be slightly cut for the National Nuclear Security Administration. DOE’s Office of Environmental Management would receive $6 billion under the bill, compared to DOE’s FY’16 budget request of about $5.82 billion, according to a release. Defense environmental cleanup would be funded at $5.2 billion under the bill, compared to $5.05 billion in the budget request.

Funding for the NNSA stands at $12.3 billion in the subcommittee’s version of the legislation, compared to DOE’s request of $12.56 billion. That includes $8.9 billion for weapons activities, similar to DOE’s $8.85 billion request. Defense nuclear nonproliferation would come in below the request to $1.7 billion in the legislation, compared to the request of $1.94 billion. Naval reactors would be funded at about $1.3 billion in the bill, comparable to DOE’s $1.37 billion request.
