DOE Deputy to Headline Cleanup Workshop

By ExchangeMonitor

Deputy Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette will discuss the department’s priorities under the Trump administration today at the third DOE National Cleanup Workshop in Alexandria, Va.

Brouillette was sworn in as deputy secretary in August, the second and to date most recent DOE political appointee in the administration, behind only Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

The Cleanup Workshop offers an annual update on the state of the $6 billion yearly remediation of DOE’s nuclear operations legacy, managed by the Office of Environmental Management.

Other speakers scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday: acting Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management James Owendoff, discussing the office’s 45-day review; Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.), offering insights the House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus; and a host of DOE and contractor officials discussing various topics.

The Cleanup Caucus is also hosting a panel discussion on “Increasing Urgency in EM Cleanup” at 5:30 p.m. today at the Rayburn House Office Building.

During the ExchangeMonitor’s RadWaste Summit last week in Summerlin, Nev., Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Environmental Management Roger Jarrell hinted that more details could be released on a new special projects office within EM that will be headed by Dae Chung. Owendoff is scheduled to discuss the implications of a 45-day review of the EM Office, which started shortly after he became acting assistant secretary.
