The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) on Tuesday announced a 2.5-month extension of Swift & Staley’s (SSI) contract for infrastructure support services at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky. The contract had previously been set to expire on Sept. 15. "Today’s contract extension, valued at approximately $8.4 million, is intended to accommodate DOE’s competitive procurement process for a new infrastructure contract, which was awarded to SSI on June 17, 2015," DOE said in a press release. "This action will allow for transition to the new contract to occur without interruptions of ongoing services." Services covered by the contract include facility maintenance and repair; grounds maintenance; pest control; and computing, telecommunication, and cybersecurity. The former uranium enrichment facility is undergoing decontamination and decommissioning as part of DOE EM’s mission to clean up waste produced by U.S. government defense nuclear operations and atomic energy research.
