Department of Energy cleanup chief David Huizenga said yesterday that DOE hopes to begin shipments of a controversial portion of the uranium-233 inventory stored at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to the Nevada National Security Site “later this year.” DOE has been making “steady progress” in discussions with Nevada officials on the Department’s plans to send the Consolidated Edison Uranium Solidification Project (CEUSP) material to the NNSS for disposal, Huizenga said during a hearing held by the House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee. State officials have expressed opposition to the shipments, and in response, DOE established a working group with Nevada officials to help address their concerns. “We’re working with them to help them understand that we do know how to transport materials. We’ve been transporting these materials safely for decades, and we intend to transport this material in a similarly safe fashion,“ Huizenga said yesterday. “So there’s a number of things they’ve asked for to have them become more comfortable with our proposal, and we’re working through one by one each one of these activities. We’re going to have continued discussions with them so we can hopefully reach resolution and start shipping later this year.”
