DOE IG RAISES CONCERN ABOUT UNUSED COMPUTERS AT SRS

By ExchangeMonitor

After finding that computers purchased by the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Operations Office for the Forest Service have gone unused, DOE’s Inspector General has raised management concerns. The Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service-Savannah River bought 17 computers in September 2010 using DOE funds through an interagency agreement. The IG found that 16 of those computers were not being used, were not properly accounted for, and were not stored in a secure location. The Forest Service said that after the computers were purchased, it was discovered that they would be too expensive to connect to the site’s network. However, it had not consulted with the site’s Safeguards and Information Technology, which had a less expensive alternative available. The IG made several recommendations to the site, including ensuring that the Forest Service is informed of who to contact on computer and network issues and modifying the agreement with the Forest Service to require that all sensitive property purchased with SRO funds is managed according to DOE guidelines.
