The Department of Energy issued a solicitation notice last week looking for a contractor to assist in the movement of spent nuclear fuel from research reactors to an unidentified national laboratory. The DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, through the Idaho Operations Office, is responsible for the disposition  of university research reactor spent nuclear fuel disposition, and this contract would help ensure the transportation of the fuel. According to the statement of work, the contractor would be responsible for all tasks required to transport spent nuclear fuel. “Support is requested for assistance in the shipment of irradiated fuel elements (Spent Nuclear Fuel or SNF) from Domestic Research Reactors (DRR) to a designated Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratory,” the notice said. “This support shall consist of actions necessary to assist universities with all tasks required to transport SNF in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations.” Responses are due by Feb. 23.
