DOE kicks off $293M Genesis Mission solicitation

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy is inviting teams from national laboratories, domestic industry, and universities to submit proposals as part of a $293-million requisition for application (RFA) being issued as part of the Genesis Mission.

DOE said in a Tuesday press release it is inviting submissions for “The Genesis Mission: Transforming Science and Energy with AI [artificial intelligence].” The teams will be invited to use AI for part of more than 20 national challenges identified under Genesis, ranging from biotechnology to nuclear energy.

Phase I awards will range from $500,000 to $750,000 and will support a nine-month project period. Phase II awards will range from $6 million to $15 million over a three-year project period, according to the press release.

DOE plans to hold an informational webinar about this RFA on March 26. Phase I applications and Phase II letters of intent are due April 28. Phase II applications are due May 19.

During a panel discussion at the Waste Management Symposia last week in Phoenix, DOE officials lauded the Genesis Mission as having the potential to help solve some of society’s most vexing problems.

“The Genesis Mission has caught the imagination of our scientific and engineering communities to tackle national challenges in the age of AI,” said Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil and Genesis Mission Director. “With these investments we seek breakthrough ideas and novel collaborations leveraging the scientific prowess of our National Laboratories, the private sector, universities, and science philanthropies.”
