DOE launches Genesis consortium

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy said this week it launched a consortium, or public-private partnership, to support the Donald Trump administration’s Genesis Mission in using artificial intelligence (AI) to expedite research and strengthen national security.

According to DOE’s press release, the consortium will feature capabilities from DOE, the national laboratories, the private sector and academic institutions. The consortium will also host annual meetings, workshops and technology showcases, as well as AI-focused working groups, as regular events for members to network and collaborate, the release said.

“The Genesis Mission Consortium represents a bold step toward transforming the way we approach scientific challenges,” Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil said in the release.

The Genesis Mission is an executive order from November by Trump which calls for a national effort to use AI to accelerate “the speed of scientific discovery” for national security development purposes. Shortly after the executive order was released, the DOE’s semiautonomous National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) published a request for information from interested entities with aims to incorporate AI into the agency’s critical operations.

At Exchange Monitor’s Nuclear Deterrence Summit at the end of January, NNSA’s head Brandon Williams said Charles Ball was NNSA’s specific lead for the Genesis Mission.
