The Department of Energy is planning to renew another multiple year funding agreement with the Nye County, Nev. Sheriff’s office to help protect the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), located 65 miles outside of Las Vegas.
The department will conclude its current two-year agreement with Nye County on Dec. 31. The existing cooperative agreement provides the Nye County Sheriff’s office with roughly $557,000 during 2026.
The next agreement could cover three years, according to a Sept. 24 notice in SAM.gov. The cooperative agreement is to financially support the Sheriff’s office in providing everything from traffic enforcement, crowd control and security for public protests and backing up the NNSS security force as needed. The Sheriff’s office could be summoned to help out the Nevada test site in a wide variety of emergencies, according to the notice.
“The NNSS is located entirely within the limits of Nye County, Nevada and the responsibility for the enforcement of local and state laws on the NNSS remains the responsibility of the Nye County Sheriff’s Office,” according to the notice.
“The initial cooperative agreement was awarded for a maximum reimbursable ceiling of $515,052 and $557,889 respectively for the first and second year,” the online procurement notice continued. “The follow-on cooperative agreement will span three years. Actual obligations will be incrementally funded each calendar year with the initial incremental obligation for the first year estimated at $275,000.”
