DOE NE awards nearly $53 million in research funding

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy said Tuesday it selected 46 domestic nuclear energy-related research projects to share a total of $52.8 million.

The Office of Nuclear Energy said in its press release the awards support technology development and early career faculty research activities that contribute to President Donald Trump administration’s nuclear power initiatives.

The selected projects are said to increase access to research infrastructure and grow the United States’s nuclear workforce, DOE said.

Funding is divided into two focus areas that assist with early-stage research at universities, national labs and industry across 19 states, according to the release.

The first focus area is nuclear research and development.

DOE said 43 projects will receive awards through both the Nuclear Energy University Program for research and development and integrated projects and the Nuclear Science User Facilities for facility access.

Founded in 2009, the Nuclear Energy University Program funds nuclear energy research and equipment upgrades at colleges and universities and provides student educational support, DOE said.

The awards are funded through both the Nuclear Energy University Program and the Nuclear Science User Facilities program.

The other focus area is the distinguished early career program.

DOE is committed to helping supply researchers and educators with the resources and funding they need to keep driving innovative nuclear energy research and scientific breakthroughs,” Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategic Crosscuts Michelle Scott said.
