The Department of Energy is now only seeking responses from small businesses in a solicitation for a conceptual design for used fuel interim storage and transportation. When the sources sought notice was first posted on Jan. 23 there was no specification for small businesses, but a modification posted Friday “seeks responses from small businesses only and encourages small businesses to consider teaming arrangements.” The notice “seeks to determine the availability and technical capability of qualified businesses or organizational groups to provide a conceptual design for consolidated interim storage and transportation of used nuclear fuel.” The project will include designing one or more used fuel interim storage facilities that could potentially be used in multiple locations. The work would also include preparing for large-scale transport of used nuclear fuel. The sources sought is open for all businesses, and eventually DOE will seek to issue a solicitation for a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for 12 months. Responses are due March 28.
