Duke seeks license renewal for Robinson plant

By ExchangeMonitor

Duke Energy has filed an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a second license renewal for its Robinson Nuclear Plant in Hartville, S.C., the company said this week.

Robinson Nuclear Plant began operating in 1971 and has one unit, a pressurized-water reactor, that generates 759 megawatts. It is also the first commercial nuclear plant in the Southeast, according to Duke.

Robinson’s operating license was first renewed in 2004 for an additional 20 years until 2030. Duke filed its renewal application on April 1, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission website.

The NRC made the application from Duke Energy available for public viewing on April 4.

Duke said it is pursuing all 11 of its operating nuclear reactors, according to an April 8 press release. Last week, Duke’s Oconee Nuclear Plant was granted a second operating license by the NRC that will last until 2050.
