The Navy on Monday awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $2.28 billion cost-only modification covering additional advance procurement and advance construction of five more Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine hulls.
The contract announcement noted this award also supports additional program execution in accordance with a Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement focused on “Obligations in Advance of Fiscal Year 2026 Funding (Deviation 2026-O0001).”
The work will be split between Electric Boat’s shipyard in Groton, Conn. at 70%, subcontractor Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Newport News Shipyard in Virginia at 15%, and Electric Boat’s Quonset Point, R.I., facility at 15%.
While Electric Boat is the primary contractor for Navy submarines, it works with HII as a subcontractor to split production of most boats, usually taking turns on final assembly and outfitting.
Funding is being obligated and made available with no expiration following this fiscal year via $2.23 billion in fiscal 2026 National Sea-based Deterrence Funds and $54 million in fiscal 2026 Navy other procurement funds.
