Firefighters expect on Thursday to contain the wildfire that has threatened the Hanford Site in Washington state. Tuesday night they kept the fire from spreading during a red flag fire weather warning issued by the National Weather Service due to wind and low humidity. The size of the fire remained at about 275 square miles within a 117-mile perimeter line.
Crews on Wednesday worked to reinforce the perimeter line, part of it running through the security buffer zone on the west side of the Hanford nuclear reservation. The fire did not spread to the contaminated portion of the former Department of Energy plutonium production complex. Crews were starting to be released from the fire Wednesday, with many being sent to other wildfires burning in Washington and Oregon.
