Citing the devastating wildfires in Southern California, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control has extended by a week the public comment period on two major environmental documents for the Santa Susana Field Laboratory cleanup.
DTSC said last week that it was extending the comment deadline from Dec. 7 to Thursday Dec. 14 for the Draft Program Environmental Impact Report (PEIR) and Draft Program Management Plan (PMP). The Dec. 7 comment period had been the result of a 45-day extension announced in late September. The agency had released the documents for soil and groundwater cleanup for SSFL near Simi Valley in Ventura County in September.
California expects cleanup work to begin at the SSFL site in 2019 and possibly be finished in 2034. Like many other big cleanup projects, Santa Susana has been beset by its share of missed deadlines.
Boeing, NASA, and the Department of Energy are the three responsible parties for cleanup of the former site for rocket engine tests and nuclear energy research. Boeing owns most of the 2,849-acre property located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
California Gov. Edmund (Jerry) Brown has declared a state of emergency due to fires that have forced nearly 90,000 people from their homes in Southern California. The recent fires have burned roughly 175,000 acres, according to news reports. The governor has issued emergency declarations for Santa Barbara, San Diego, Los Angeles and Ventura counties, according to a recent press release from the governor’s office.
