Fluor Nabs $1.8 Billion Mod For More Naval Lab Work

By ExchangeMonitor

Naval Sea Systems Command on Thursday awarded Fluor Marine Propulsion a $1.776 billion modification for naval nuclear propulsion work at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.

Work will be split between Schenectady, N.Y. (52%), Pittsburgh (31%), Idaho Falls, Idaho (11%), and Charleston, S.C. (6%). The Navy did not disclose how long the contract runs through or what additional work it may cover beyond the original contract.

The Department of Energy’s Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a multi-site institution comprising the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories in West Mifflin, Pa.; the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site in West Milton, N.Y.; and the Naval Reactors Facility near Idaho Falls, Idaho.

In 2018, Fluor won two nuclear warship support contracts worth up to a combined total of about $30 billion over 10 years, including taking over Nuclear Naval Laboratory work from previous contractor Bechtel Corp.

The contracts it took over cover management and operations at Naval Nuclear Laboratory. Under the original contract, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) develops new nuclear propulsion systems for the Navy’s aircraft carriers and submarines and trains sailors to operate the systems at sea.

This new award is funded via $291 million in fiscal year 2020 Navy operations and maintenance; FY 2019 and 2020 research, development, test and evaluation; and fiscal 2019 shipbuilding accounts obligated at award time. In all, $208 million will expire at the end of this fiscal year.
