Following Safety Incidents, LANL Director Communicates Expectations to Managers

By ExchangeMonitor
Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan early last month communicated to all LANL personnel his “expectations for management responsibilities” to support employee safety and security, according to a letter sent from the Energy Department’s Los Alamos Field Office representative to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board released yesterday. “This direction follows a number of recent safety and security incidents that have highlighted a need for improvement in these areas,” the letter states. “The Director emphasized that there is nothing more important than ensuring every reasonable step is being taken to ensure workforce safety and security.” LANL did not respond to a Weapons Complex Morning Briefing request for comment on what specific expectations McMillan communicated.

Dated July 10, the letter states that the management steps will include a “visible and active leadership presence in the field,” and increased access to environment, safety and health experts. LANL officials also trained managers on how to “effectively observe activities and communicate” findings.
