Following the retirement of Ken Bromberg in October, Pete Hanlon is now in place as Assistant Deputy Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Fissile Materials Disposition. Hanlon previously was executive staff director and military assistant to NNSA Administrator Tom D’Agostino. Before coming to NNSA he had a 25-year career in the U.S. Navy, serving on nuclear submarines and retiring as captain. As head of the office, Hanlon will oversee NNSA’s efforts to downblend highly enriched uranium into reactor fuel and the disposition of surplus plutonium. That includes the $4.86 billion Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility at the Savannah River Site, which is expected to convert plutonium into nuclear reactor fuel. Bromberg had led the office since 2007.
