Here’s the timeline for NNSA contracts at key DOE weapons complex sites
The Department of Energy, hires private companies to oversee and manage the facilities in its weapons complex, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
These prime, or management and operating (M&O) contractors, normally consist of joint ventures between companies, and are not only responsible for daily operations at weapons complex sites but also for the long-term, national security-dependent missions at the sites.
Below are the NNSA contractors involved at each site and, assuming the performance measurements are met, when each contract is up.
- Kansas City National Security Site: Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies, which consists of Honeywell International, has been the M&O contractor at Kansas City since July 2015. The contract goes until September 2030, or a little less than five years away.
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS) – a team of Bechtel National, University of California, BWX Technologies and Amentum – is the joint venture that has served as the M&O contractor at the lab since October 2007, a whopping 18 years. In late 2024, NNSA announced LLNL’s contract had been extended to Sept. 30, 2031, with an additional year option to Sept. 30, 2032, a lab spokesperson told the Exchange Monitor.
- Los Alamos National Laboratory: Triad Nuclear Security – a conglomerate of Battelle Memorial Institute, University of California, and Texas A&M University – is the joint venture that has served as the lab’s M&O since June 2018. That contract is up in October 2028.
- Nevada National Security Site (NNSS): Mission Support and Test Services – a conglomerate of Honeywell International, Jacobs Engineering Group, and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Nuclear – is the joint venture that has served as the M&O contractor at NNSS since May 2017. That contract is up in November 2027.
- Pantex Plant: PanTeXas Deterrence – a conglomerate led by BWX Technologies (BWXT) Technical Services Group, followed by Fluor Federal Services, SOC, and the Texas A&M University System – is the newest joint venture that took over as the M&O contractor for Pantex in June 2024. That contract currently ends October 2029, but has the potential to run until October 2044.
- Sandia National Laboratory: National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, consisting of Honeywell International, has been the M&O contractor for Sandia since December 2016. The contract goes until April 2027.
- Savannah River Site: Savannah River Nuclear Solutions – led by Fluor Corporation followed by Newport News Nuclear – has served as the M&O contractor for Savannah River Site since 2008. The current contract end is September 2026, but it could extend to September 2027.
- Y-12 National Security Complex: Consolidated Nuclear Security – a conglomerate consisting of Bechtel National, Leidos Innovations Corporation, ATK Launch Systems and SOC – is the joint venture that has served as the M&O contractor for Y-12 since 2014. It also used to be the joint contractor for Pantex as well until PanTeXas Deterrence took over. This contract for Y-12 runs until September 2027.
