House Committees to Appoint Subcommittee Leaders Today

By ExchangeMonitor

Key House congressional committees will announce today the rosters of subcommittees with jurisdiction over the Energy Department and its $6-billion-a-year nuclear cleanup program.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, as well as the House Appropriations Committee, were slated to hold formal organizational meetings today, during which panel leaders will announce the jurisdiction and leadership of the congressional subcommittees that write the first drafts of all federal laws.

The House Appropriations Committee, which writes the government’s annual spending bills, planned to convene for its meeting at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. The panel had not identified subcommittee leaders at press time for Morning Briefing.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, which sets policy for federal agencies including DOE, scheduled its meeting for 1 p.m. Eastern time. At the meeting, Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) will formally be awarded the gavel as chairman of the Energy Subcommittee — Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas) had it last year — while Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) will continue as ranking member for the minority.

As with full committees, no Republican may be chairman of a subcommittee for more than three terms, or six years. Democrats do not term-limit their committee leaders in the House.
