The House Energy and Commerce Committee has cancelled a markup that was scheduled to be held next week on a bill sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) that would require the Department of Energy to establish a pilot program to re-enrich a portion of its inventory of depleted uranium hexafluoride tails. As a result, the future of the “Energy and Revenue Enrichment Act” now appears unclear going forward. First introduced last year, the bill would also require proceeds raised through the sale of the re-enriched material to be placed into the federal uranium enrichment D&D fund, which helps cover the cost of performing cleanup work at the Oak Ridge, Paducah and Portsmouth sites. The bill underwent a markup in a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee last summer, but saw no further Congressional action.
