KAIST Develops Process to Mass Produce Efficient CO2 Absorbent

Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology on Thursday announced the development of a new technology that will make the mass production of carbon dioxide absorbents easier. The new technology is intended to solve a continuing issue for amine absorbents used in post-combustion carbon capture: the substance is not efficient in the desorption of gas and destabilizes after repeated use.

The new technology uses silicon dioxide and polyethyleneimine to develop a new absorbent that increases the efficiency of desorption and the reaction velocity of the substance.

“The development of CO2 absorbent remained at a laboratory standard, or at grams-level, but our latest development improved the potential for commercialization,” said study head Choi Min-kee in a report by Korea Bizwire. “We expect its commercialization within the next five years.”
