Kentucky congressman to chair House energy committee

By ExchangeMonitor

Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) will chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the 119th session of Congress, beginning in January, the committee announced Monday.

The Energy and Commerce committee authorizes and oversees civilian nuclear programs at the Department of Energy.

Guthrie has represented Kentucky’s second congressional district since 2009. The western edge of the district is about 75 miles west by road from Paducah, Ky., near the second of two Department of Energy defense-uranium enrichment sites being cleaned up by DOE’s Office of Environmental Management.

The Republican party will have control of the federal government come Jan. 20, when President-elect Donald Trump (R) is sworn in for a second term. Republicans won narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate in November’s elections.
