Lawmaker seeks defense site SMR study in NDAA

By ExchangeMonitor

An amendment to the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act by an Arizona Republican would require a study into the idea of siting small modular reactors (SMRs) at defense installations.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) has proposed an amendment, adopted by voice vote on the House floor, directing the secretary of defense to do a detailed study into the cost, benefits and feasibility of deploying small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) at Department of Defense installations.

The study would assess potential sites, “evaluate benefits to mission readiness and energy resilience, analyze regulatory and safety factors, review pilot projects, and recommend future implementation,” according to text filed with the House Rules Committee.

SMRs can generate anywhere from a few megawatts to hundreds of megawatts, according to the Department of Energy. These smaller units can typically be built for less investment and on a smaller footprint than full-size nuclear reactors.

A company recently signed an agreement to produce a microreactor for the Department of the Air Force.
