Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is holding off until April on implementing a salary reduction and closure day plan at the lab that was designed to address a sequestration-driven budget shortfall of $120 million. Livermore Director Parney Albright had previously said the lab could implement the plan as early as this week, but in a message to employees late last week, the lab cited “uncertainties surrounding the details of the continuing resolution deadline of March 27” as well as sequestration impacts and other factors as a reason to “wait until more clarity was provided from Washington, D.C. on the fiscal impact to the Laboratory.” While the impacts of sequestration are being felt across the weapons complex, Livermore is among the NNSA’s hardest hit sites. Last month, Albright detailed a plan to address the budget shortfall that would include temporary 10 percent salary reductions and bi-weekly closure days for full-time employees. Those closure days would come every other Friday, when the lab would operate similar to how it runs on a weekend.
