Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory official Kim Budil is taking over as the University of California’s Vice President for Laboratory Management, University of California President Janet Napolitano said yesterday. Budil takes over for Glenn Mara, who announced his retirement last year and will step down April 30. In her new role, Budil will oversee UC work at three national laboratories: Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley. “Kim is a proven and respected scientist and manager in the national and global security arenas and in the national lab and science communities,” Norm Pattiz, the chairman of the Boards of Governors for Lawrence Livermore National Security and Los Alamos National Security, said in a statement. “She has tremendous depth and breadth of experience across a wide range of scientific programs and a strong commitment to and understanding of the critical roles that Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National labs play in service to our nation.”
She is currently working as the program manager of the Nuclear Counterterrorism Program in Livermore’s Global Security Directorate, but her experience at the lab cuts across its various mission elements. In 27 years at the lab, her work has involved her in the lab’s Weapons and Complex Integration, National Ignition Facility, and Physical and Life Sciences directorates. She also has twice been detailed to Department of Energy headquarters, working with the National Nuclear Security Administration in the Office of Defense Science and spending two years as a senior advisor to the Under Secretary of Energy for Science.
