LOOKING AHEAD

Management of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s three nuclear weapons laboratories will be the focus Wednesday when the heads of the three labs testify before the Senate Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee. Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan, Sandia National Laboratories Director Paul Hommert and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director Parney Albright will be joined at the 2:30 p.m. hearing by former Lawrence Berkeley director Charles Shank and Pranalytica Inc. CEO Kumar Patel, the chairs of a National Academy of Sciences panel that was recently critical of the relationship between the labs and NNSA. Other notable events this week include:

  • The House Cleanup Caucus is holding its last two briefings for 2012 this week. On April 18, the House Cleanup Caucus will hear about the Savannah River Site; while on April 19 the briefing will focus on the Office of River Protection at Hanford. Both briefings are scheduled to be held from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. in Room 1539 of the Longworth House Office Building in Washington.
  • On April 17, Sen. Jon Kyl will offer his thoughts on Iran, missile defense and nuclear deterrence at an 8 a.m. appearance at the Capitol Hill Club.
  • On April 17, the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee is holding a hearing on the Administration’s FY 2013 budget request for atomic energy defense activities and nuclear forces programs. Witness scheduled to testify include Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Strategic Affairs Madelyn Creedon; U.S. Strategic Command chief Gen. C. Robert Kehler, USAF; National Nuclear Security Administration head Thomas D’Agostino; DOE Senior Advisor for Environmental Management David Huizenga; and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Chairman Peter Winokur. The hearing is scheduled to be held at 3 p.m. in Room 2212 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington.
  • On April 18, the House Appropriations Energy and Water Subcommittee is set to hold a markup hearing on the FY 2013 Energy and Water Appropriations bill. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in Room 2362-B of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington.
  • On April 18, the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee is scheduled to hold a hearing on “Budget and Spending Concerns at DOE.” Witness for the hearing have not yet been announced. The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington.
