Los Alamos completes 100th shipment of recovered radioactive material

By ExchangeMonitor

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Mobile Loading Source Recovery Team and Off-site Source Recovery Program completed their 100th shipment of recovered radioactive material in January, the lab announced last week.

The two teams travel nationwide to recover potentially harmful radioactive material from devices found at hospitals, universities, and research facilities. The shipment of such material in January is the 100th shipment since the partnership’s founding in 2019.

“We’re trying to reduce the amount of radioactive material in the public sphere that could be used in a dirty bomb,” Bill Stewart, program manager for the Off-site Source Recovery Program, said in the release.

The programs are part of the lab’s Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation division, and both receive funding from the Office of Radiological Security within the National Nuclear Security Administration.
