Navarro-Intera, the cleanup contractor for the Nevada National Security Site, late last week issued a Request for Proposals for a new subcontract to provide unexploded ordinance support services at the Tonopah Test Range. According to the RFP, Navarro-Intera intends to award a fixed-unit rate Time and Materials type subcontract set to run for up to approximately eight weeks, beginning “on or before” May 7. Services to be provided under the contract include a visual surveillance of the preliminary investigation work area including identification of potential unexploded ordnance / munitions and explosives of concern (UXO/MEC), determination of UXO/MEC type, and implementation of the necessary safety measures required to conduct remaining PI activities. “The preliminary investigation sites are 2-3 square miles each and consist of Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 411 (Double Tracks), CAU 412 (Clean Slate I), CAU 413 (Clean Slate II), and CAU 414 (Clean Slate III), as well as some smaller outlying support areas. The Double Tracks and Clean Slate sites were utilized by the U.S. Department of Energy to perform plutonium (Pu) dispersion tests in the early 1960s. Each of the sites is presently posted as ‘Contamination Area’ due to Pu-contaminated surface and subsurface soils,” the notice says. Bids are due for the new subcontract by April 20.
