Navarro-led lab contractor taps new boss, operations officer

By ExchangeMonitor

The contractor in charge of a major laboratory at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state said this week it has appointed Mark Hughey as its new general manager.

Navarro-led Navarro-ATL announced it has turned to Hughey to run Hanford’s 222-S laboratory. He will replace Ray Geimer, who became manager of DOE’s Hanford Field Office in September.

According to an online bio, Hughey was previously chief operations officer for Navarro-ATL, managing work of the 222-S Laboratory and overseeing on-site analysis of radioactive samples (air, liquid, soil, sludge and biological) in support of Hanford projects.

The 222-S Lab will also play a key role as Hanford empties underground tanks over time and starts converting radioactive sludge into glass for at DOE’s Waste Treatment Plant later this month.

“We’re thrilled to announce Mark Hughey as general manager of Navarro-ATL. With almost 40 years of experience in nuclear, environmental management, and safety, Mark’s leadership and expertise are unmatched,” Navarro-ATL said in a post this week on LinkedIn. “He is committed to guiding us toward becoming the “Lab of the Future” by enhancing efficiency and optimizing processes.”

In addition, Navarro also said it is turning to a retired DOE Hanford executive, Brian Stickney, to become its new chief operations officer, a position previously held by Hughey.

Stickney retired as DOE’s deputy manager of the Hanford Site in March. He announced his new job Tuesday via LinkedIn. Stickney worked in DOE’s weapons complex since 2014 and before that spent nine years in the Army, according to his LinkedIn profile.
