Nevada Seeking Comment of NNSS Landfill Draft Permits

By ExchangeMonitor
The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection put out a request for public comment last week on the draft permit for the Department of Energy’s waste disposal facilities at the Nevada National Security Site  (NNSS). The permit would cover four hazardous waste management units owned by the Department of Energy. Each unit had been permitted on its own in 1995, and subsequently in 2000, 2005, and 2010, but the state decided to combine the facilities into one permit in 2011. Each site mainly accepts hazardous waste, but some containerized low-level mixed waste that has resulted from activities at NNSS is disposed on site. Comments are due to the NDEP by Aug. 25, 2015. According to the notice, “A final decision to issue the Permit and to establish permit conditions will be made after all comments have been considered. Notice of the final decision shall be sent to each person who has delivered written comments or requested notice of the final permit decision.”
