New contractors prepare to take reins at Portsmouth, Paducah

By ExchangeMonitor

Two new Department of Energy contractor teams this week take over billions of dollars’ worth of work at the Portsmouth Site in Ohio and the Paducah Site in Kentucky.

A new Amentum-led team will be in charge of remediation at Portsmouth while an AtkinsRéalis-led team will take landlord responsibility at both Portsmouth and Paducah. This includes running depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) conversion plants. It will take over the DUF6 work from another Atkins-led contractor team.

Both joint ventures are completing a 120-transition period that followed a notice to proceed from DOE.

On Wednesday Oct. 1, Southern Ohio Cleanup Co, consisting of Amentum, Fluor and Cavendish Nuclear, take over decommissioning and demolition work at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant complex in Piketon, Ohio.

The joint venture team, which also includes four smaller subcontractors, have a contract valued at $5.87 billion, according to the SOCCO website.  The agreement with DOE could last up to 15 years. SOCCO is taking over Portsmouth cleanup work from Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth.

Likewise, Wednesday is also the day Mission Conversion Services Alliance, made up of AtkinsRéalis, Westinghouse Government Services and Amentum take over the DUF6 and landlord work at both sites. Mission Conversion Services Alliance’ contract is valued at $2.3 billion over a decade. Like SOCCO, it also has several subs acting as teaming partners.

The new contractor team is assuming the reins from Mid-America Conversion Services.
