The Citizen Task Force for the West Valley Demonstration Project in Ashford, N.Y., meets this Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time at Ashford Town offices.
The Citizen Task Force is scheduled to hear an update from BWX Technologies-led West Valley Cleanup Alliance, the new remediation contractor at West Valley.
Peggy Loop, a West Valley Cleanup Alliance manager is expected to brief the task force. According to a slide presentation, Phase 1B of West Valley remediation work will include tearing down remaining near- and below-grade components of the Main Plant Process Building as well as remediation and disposal of contaminated soil.
Last fall, the BWXT-led team was awarded a 10-year remediation contract, potentially worth $3 billion for the next phase of remediation at West Valley. West Valley Cleanup Alliance took over from the incumbent team, one led by a Jacobs subsidiary, in late June. The former Jacobs units, through Amentum Technology, is a junior partner in the new contractor team.

West Valley is a 150-acre site located 35 miles south of Buffalo and owned by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. From 1963 through 1972 the property was home to a commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facility.
A law passed by Congress, the West Valley Demonstration Project Act of 1980, made the Department of Energy responsible for solidifying the high-level radioactive waste and remediating the site. DOE also bankrolls 90% of the cleanup cost with the state footing the remaining 10% of the bill.
