NextEra Application for License Extension Made Public

By ExchangeMonitor

NextEra Energy’s application to extend its license at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2 has been made publicly available on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission website.

“The NRC staff is reviewing the application to determine if it has sufficient information to complete the agency’s extensive safety and environmental reviews,” the commission said in a press release. “If the NRC determines the application to be complete, the staff will docket it and publish a notice of opportunity to request an adjudicatory hearing before the NRC’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board.”

The company submitted the request to the NRC Nov. 16, asking to extend the licenses of the plants’ two units, which are currently on track to expire 2030 and 2033, respectively. The reactors started operating in 1970 and 1972.

NextEra submitted an initial license renewal application in December 2005 to operate Unit 1 through October 2030 and Unit 2 through March 2033. This application seeks to extend the licenses to October 2050 and March 2056, respectively.

The NRC has approved license extension applications at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point Nuclear Generating plant and the Peach Bottom Nuclear Generating System in Pennsylvania, both for 80 years.
