National Nuclear Security Administration chief Frank Klotz wrapped up a two-day visit to Y-12 last week with a VIP ribbon-cutting and ceremonies on Friday to celebrate an early milestone on the Uranium Processing Facility. Klotz called the site-readiness subproject a “significant achievement for the national security enterprise,” noting it was accomplished on time and $20 million under budget (that’s double the savings identified in previous statements). He said the UPF team is ready to move quickly to the next subproject, involving site infrastructure, and staying on track for achieving 90 percent design completion in Fiscal Year 2017 and the go-ahead on construction.
The NNSA chief called the site readiness work “a marvelous example of how we’re continuing to improve overall as an enterprise … in project management and procurement efforts and in making investments in critical infrastructure that we need to execution our mission and to take care of our people.” He noted the significance of the work being conducted by AVISCO, a small business, and being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in a partnership. “It demonstrates how we are leveraging small business partners across the country,” he said. Steven Wyatt, a spokesman for NNSA, said the procurement has not yet been awarded for the next subproject but indicated an announcement may be coming soon.
