The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) awarded Amazon Web Services (AWS) a contract, worth up to $30.7 million, to complete high-performance computing support and data processing services for the agency.
The sole source contract, which has a $10-million floor, is named “AWS Genesis Demonstrator,” and the NNSA Weapons Activities Office provided the funds. The agreement is expected to last until January 2027, but could extend until January 2029, according to procurement database HigherGov.
The “AWS Genesis Demonstrator” gets its name from the Genesis Mission, an executive order by President Donald Trump that calls for a national effort to use artificial intelligence (AI) for research and national security.
Already, NNSA was awarded $28 million to improve its technology infrastructure, which a senior official said would go toward “improving the technology infrastructure for the Genesis Mission.” NNSA has also issued a request for information to AI experts on how to integrate AI into the agency’s critical operations, and responses to that are due Jan. 23.
NNSA has partnered with 24 organizations, including AWS, to advance the Genesis Mission, DOE said in a December press release.
