NNSA Recovers One Millionth Curie of Domestic Sealed Sources

By ExchangeMonitor
The National Nuclear Security Administration announced yesterday that last month it recovered the one millionth curie of radioactive sealed sources through the Off-Site Source Recovery Project. The program, which has operated since 1999, aims to keep excess or abandoned sealed sources out of the hands of potential terrorists. “This recovery shipment of the one-millionth curie is the latest on the list of major accomplishments the OSRP team has achieved over the years,” said DOE/NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Anne Harrington. “These recovery efforts help keep all of us safe from the malicious use of unwanted radioactive sources.” The program has recovered more than 38,000 sources total from 1,100 locations. The latest source was removed from a facility in Maryland with the support of technical experts from Los Alamos National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory.
