Longtime National Nuclear Security Administration nonproliferation official Ken Sheely is moving to the agency’s recently created Office of Infrastructure and Operations with a handful of other nonproliferation hands, he announced yesterday. Sheely told colleagues of the move in an email that was obtained by NW&M Monitor, though he did not say what position he would hold in the agency’s new office. NNSA spokesman Josh McConaha confirmed the move, but was unable to say what new position Sheely was assuming. Sheely has worked with the NNSA’s Global Threat Reduction Initiative for the last seven years, most recently serving as the associate assistant deputy administrator of the program. NNSA’s Office of Infrastructure and Operations was created last year as a way of streamlining management of the agency and its field offices, and is headed up by former Naval Reactors official Michael Lempke.
Sheely said GTRI officials Jeff Chamberlin, Jessica Kunkle and Ty Deschamp would also be moving to the Office of Infrastructure and Operations (NA-00). “The decision to leave GTRI was extremely difficult for all of us for many reasons, but we feel the transition will be positive for NNSA as a whole,” Sheely said in an email to colleagues. “Working in NA-00 will give us an opportunity to share GTRI and DNN [Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation] best practices and lead enterprise-wide changes in NNSA. We are certain that GTRI will continue to thrive. Both the Hill and the White House acknowledge the importance of GTRI’s work to ensure national security and recognize the historical accomplishments that you achieve on a daily basis. The transition to NA-00 will take place over the coming weeks and although no replacements have been announced as of yet, we will ensure a smooth transition will take place.”
