NO WORD YET ON MAKEUP OF CHU’S SECURITY PANEL

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy and Energy Secretary Steven Chu are believed to still be in the process of putting together a panel to analyze its model for protecting nuclear materials across the weapons complex. The Department hasn’t said who will be on the panel, which was among the latest steps taken by DOE in response to the July 28 security breach at the Y-12 National Security Complex. In a statement Friday, NNSA spokesman Josh McConaha said that the review would “begin shortly when the Secretary asks observers outside the Department to analyze the current model for protection of nuclear materials and explore options for protecting these sites.”

The review comes on top of several reviews that are ongoing or have been completed in recent weeks stemming from the Y-12 incident. McConaha said an investigation by DOE’s Office of Health, Safety and Security that was completed last week “reinforced the seriousness of the incident and will help improve security at Y-12 and across the Department.” DOE’s Inspector General has already completed a review of the incident, as has the NNSA, and a review of the organizational structure of the agency’s security management by Brig. Gen. Sandra Finan is underway, as is an “extent of condition review” of all DOE sites and HSS inspections across the weapons complex.
