Northrop Grumman yesterday was named the recipient of a $963.5 million contract, beating out Boeing to sustain the Minuteman 3 Ground Subsystem until Jan. 31, 2020, as part of the Future ICBM Sustainment and Acquisition Concept (FISAC). Northrop’s was the third subsystem–and fourth overall–contract awarded under the FISAC, after the Defense Department respectively named BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing the Integration Support Contractor, Reentry Subsystem and Guidance Subsystem contractors. Northrop is currently the managing contractor under the ICBM Prime Integration Contract (IPIC) subcontracting structure, which is set to expire on Sept. 30. The Air Force-managed FISAC, which gives the service authority to directly award contracts for separate parts of the ICBM system to different companies, will go into full effect on Oct. 1.
On July 31, 2013, the Pentagon announced BAE as the recipient of a $534.9 million contract to provide FISAC Integration Support Contractor services in support of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) ICBM Systems Program Office. Northrop has been transitioning out of its IPIC role ever since. In its ICBM Ground Subsystem role, Northrop Grumman will provide sustainment engineering, technical assistance and management services, which includes sustainment, assessment, system modification and technical support. Work will be performed at Hill AFB, Vandenberg AFB, Malmstrom AFB, Minot AFB, F.E. Warren AFB, Offutt AFB, and in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Needham, Mass.
