NRC to Address COVID-19 Exemptions Moving Forward

By ExchangeMonitor

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a meeting Thursday addressing licensing issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioners will discuss work hours, security inspection exemptions and other pandemic-related topics.

On March 30, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) made work-hour exceptions, allowing plant operators to work up to 86 hours in a work week, up from the standard 72-hour limit. The change was made to account for plants with workers out of commission due to COVID-19.

According to Thursday’s presentation, which the commission released ahead of the meeting, the NRC has received several requests for work-hour exemptions since the start of the pandemic and anticipates more moving forward.

The commission has also granted some force-on-force security inspection exemptions over the course of the pandemic, and will discuss plans to issue a letter by the end of October to provide more clarification for the rest of the year and another for 2021.

The meeting will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
