NRC APPROVES CLASS B AND C TRANSPORT CASKS FOR SHIPMENTS

By ExchangeMonitor
Class B and C radwaste can begin moving across the country, including to Waste Control Specialists, again after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission late last week issued approvals for EnergySolutions’ Type B casks. EnergySolutions owns and/or schedules all four of the 8-120B casks that constitute the entire fleet of containers capable of transporting Class B and C radwaste in the U.S. On April 27, the same day WCS opened to provide the first disposal option for Class B and C waste in years, EnergySolutions suspended all scheduled shipments of that material after discovering a design flaw. Earlier this month EnergySolutions held meetings to urge the NRC to approve interim shipments in the current casks while the company designs, gets approval for and fabricates an answer to the design flaw. On May 25 the NRC issued those approvals—for both the 8-120B and 10-160B casks—thus allowing movement of Class B and C radwaste to begin again, through August. EnergySolutions said it believes it will have the design flaw fully addressed by early August.
