The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued the final environmental assessment for the Palisades nuclear plant finding no significant impacts.
Holtec previously purchased the Covert Township, Mich. nuclear plant from Entergy to decommission it. However, the company has changed plans and has made an effort to restart the plant.
In cooperation with the Department of Energy’s Loan Program Office, the NRC led the conduction of the environmental review for the project. The NRC announced the issuing of the two documents on May 30.
The NRC issued a draft environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the Palisades restart on the Federal Register on Jan. 31. The agency posted the final environmental assessment and FONSI for the plant on the Federal Register on May 30.
While Holtec moves closer to restarting the Palisades plant, the company is still waiting on various operating licenses to be approved by the NRC. According to the NRC website, the agency is estimated to complete two license amendment requests around August 15 and September 30, respectively.
Holtec has previously said that the Palisades operations could restart by August 2025.
Along with the Palisades restart, Holtec said a similar environmental report will support the limited work authorization for its two SMR-300s at the site, which is targeted to be filed in December this year.
