NRC Extends Comment Period on Decommissioning Rules

By ExchangeMonitor
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the public comment period for its decommissioning rulemaking from Jan. 4 to March 18, allowing the agency to collect more feedback as it attempts to improve nuclear reactor decommissioning regulations.

The extension follows a number of requests for an extension, including one from lawmakers in Vermont and Massachusetts. In a Dec. 7 letter addressed to Commission Chairman Stephen Burns, Sens. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), along with Reps. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and William Keating (D-Mass.), requested the extension. They also suggested public meetings in states where plants are scheduled for closure or in the process of shutting down.
